The breathtaking scenery, the strong culture, the rich history and the tradition – everything makes this country worth visiting if you want to get to know more about Southeast Europe. These stunning destinations of North Macedonia will leave you mesmerized and help you see why North Macedonia is on top of the bucket list of many travelers all over the world.

Bistra Lake

Situated in the National Park of Mavrovo, Bistra Lake is one of the most serene and magnificent destinations in North Macedonia. With its clear blue waters and surrounding mountains, the lake is perfect for a day of stargazing or heartwarming conversation with friends.

One of its most alluring features is a solitary island, home to Bistra Monastery. Dating back to 11th century, it is one of only two Orthodox monasteries in North Macedonia. The monastery itself is named after St Bogorodica or Mother of God and offers stunning views across Lake Bistra and surrounding peaks. If you visit it early enough in the morning, you will be able to watch monks gather their fruits from nearby gardens and eat a vegetarian breakfast on peaceful terraces overlooking wildflower meadows. The monastery complex also houses an ethnographic museum which exhibits stunning artefacts from both medieval times and later periods.

Visitors can also take a cable car to Bistra, a small hamlet nearby with wonderful restaurants and traditional mountain restaurants, especially in summer when grilled trout is on everyone’s mind. It takes just ten minutes by cable car and costs less than three euros. There are also possibilities for horse riding or biking around Lake Bistra. If you visit in winter, remember that snow scooters are available at all restaurants on Bistra with an access road to Mihodolska Chuka from Debar village.

Ohrid Lake

It’s a perfect place for stargazing, relaxing, and spending time with loved ones. The lake is also home to some heartwarming stories and magnificent views. For example, if you walk around the lake you will find monasteries dating back to 5th century AD.

Many swimmers believe that jumping into its cool water on a hot summer day is one of life’s greatest pleasures. The lake is also famous for hosting one of Europe’s most ancient and exciting sporting events, a rowing competition known as Kavadarci rowing. You will find no shortage of cafes and restaurants along its shore. At night, you can see candlelit tables where people gather for food and drinks.

On summer nights, you can enjoy a glass of wine and take in views of stars unobstructed by light pollution. It’s easy to spend entire days wandering around this natural beauty without feeling the need to leave. Boats are available for rent or you can swim from point to point. Families visit this area during summers and it’s not uncommon to find children swimming off their parents’ shoulders. Kids love playing in shallow waters while adults enjoy kayaking or exploring ruins which date back centuries ago. No matter what your age, it’s likely that Ohrid Lake will make your day!

Situated in the north-western part of the country, the lake is fed by three rivers – Lumi i Gjakove, Bistrica e Madhe and Radika. Surrounded by mountains, the lake offers stunning views and is a popular spot for hiking, fishing and picnicking.

You can travel to this location by car or on foot, with hotels located close to the lakeside. If you’re looking for more adventure, you can also try paragliding or rafting down one of the rivers feeding into it! The Church of Saint George near Krusevo attracts many visitors each year thanks to its impressive architecture. Dedicated to George – a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity during his imprisonment – this church dates back to 1847 and features frescoes from artist Aleksandar Makedonski that depict scenes from Jesus’ life. The dramatic landscape surrounding Krusevo also makes it an excellent place for cycling!

The Blue Eye is another popular natural attraction that you can find in Kicevo. It is an extraordinarily beautiful lake surrounded by hills, trees and bushes. The unique water color is down to tufas (calcium deposits) filtering the water, which give it a cobalt hue.
