Unforgettable Destinations of Ethiopia: An Adventurer’s Dream

Few countries in the world have as diverse a landscape as Ethiopia, with its plains, mountains, and deserts providing experiences like few others in the world can match. Couple that with Ethiopia’s unrivaled history and culture, and you have an adventurous experience the likes of which you’ve never experienced before! To get you started on your Ethiopian adventure, here are some destinations you need to visit in Ethiopia, whether it’s on your first trip or your hundredth.

Addis Ababa, The Capital

As the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa is unsurprisingly a bustling and vibrant city. However, what many don’t know is that this city is also home to some mesmerizing sites. From the beautiful Holy Trinity Cathedral to the scenic Entoto Mountains, there are plenty of places to explore in Addis Ababa. And when you need a break from all the sightseeing, you can relax in one of the city’s many parks or enjoy a cup of coffee at one of its many cafes.

Also located in Addis Ababa is Africa Hall, where some of Africa’s most prominent leaders met to discuss independence. Overlooking a beautiful garden, Africa Hall is now a conference centre and popular tourist attraction. A stroll through African Hall and its garden takes you back to an important part of Ethiopia’s history, while also providing you with an opportunity to marvel at nature and enjoy breathtaking views across Addis Ababa. It may seem strange that historic sites can be found in what is arguably a bustling city like Addis Ababa, but many people make day trips from their hotels or guesthouses to visit them. This way they get to see these historic sites as well as relax in one of Addis Ababa’s parks or cafes when they need a break from sightseeing.

Axum

The first stop on our unforgettable tour of Ethiopia is the mesmerizing city of Axum. As the former capital of the Aksumite Kingdom, Axum is rich in history and culture. The city is home to a number of ancient ruins, including the imposing Stelae Park, which features a number of towering stone monoliths. But Axum is not just a historical site; it is also a beautiful city, with scenic views of the surrounding mountains and countryside.

There are also a number of interesting things to do when you aren’t admiring history, such as visiting one of many local craft markets. In particular, there is an attractive market just outside of town where locals sell pottery, leather goods, clothes and traditional foodstuffs. It was here that I found some interesting souvenirs to take back home!

Addis Ababa, and features an impressive range of wildlife, including mountain nyalas, buffalos and baboons. Though I didn’t have time to visit it myself, nearby attractions include more historic buildings such as churches and monasteries dating back to medieval times. These are found in historic sites like Lalibela and Roha.

Lalibela

In the heart of Lalibela are 11 medieval churches carved from a single piece of rock. These monolithic churches, some hewn out of the ground and others standing on hilltops, were built in the 12th and 13th centuries. They are considered to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are a must-see for any adventurer.

The most famous site is Bet Giyorgis, which means House of St. George in Amharic. This rock-hewn church is located in what is known as Lower Town and was carved out of a single block of syenite granite by people using nothing but picks and hammers. The result is a magnificent church built with pillars, ribbed vaults, capitals, arches and window openings that follow incredibly precise patterns that are still being studied today by scholars.

Ziway – Ziway is a town in northern Ethiopia that may seem quite ordinary at first, but is actually home to some of Africa’s most famous rock-hewn churches.

Lake Tana

If you’re looking for an adventure, Ethiopia is the perfect place to go. There’s plenty to do and see, it has a very diverse landscape and people from many different backgrounds. And one of the most popular destinations is Lake Tana.
Situated in the northwest of the country, Lake Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile. It’s a beautiful spot for hiking, camping, and bird watching.

There are also a number of islands on Lake Tana that are home to monasteries dating back centuries. A visit to one of these islands is a must-do while you’re in the area.
So if you’re looking for an unforgettable destination, add Ethiopia to your list. Whether it’s Lake Tana or the majestic Mount Entoto, this country has so much to offer. And with more than 80 languages spoken here, visitors can explore their own identity too.
There are a few places in the world that stand out as incredibly scenic, Lalibela is one of them as the 11 churches there were built during the 12th century.

Gondar

Nestled in the mountains of Ethiopia, Gondar is a city rich in history and culture. From the castles that dot the landscape to the vibrant markets, there is something for everyone in Gondar. And for those who love adventure, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding countryside. So if you’re looking for an unforgettable destination, add Gondar to your list!

If you’d like to make a day trip out of it, rent a car or bicycle and head north. Located 10 kilometers outside of town, the Debre Birbir National Park houses plenty of majestic giraffes over a square kilometer of savannah. On your way back into town stop by Lake Tana, one of the country’s most scenic spots with its magnificent views of waterfalls and cliffs on either side. To get away from it all head east to Bahir Dar where you can find monasteries perched on hilltops overlooking lush green valleys or relax at one of the many beaches nearby.

With so much to see and do, it’s no wonder that Ethiopia has become a favorite destination for adventurers around the world.

Harar Jugol

The Harar Jugol, or the old city of Harar, is a walled city in eastern Ethiopia. The city is located on a hilltop and is surrounded by deserts. The city was founded in the seventh century and has been a trade center for centuries. The city is home to many mosques, shrines, and markets. UNESCO has designated Harar Jugol as a World Heritage Site.

Due to its location, there are also many historical buildings, including homes and tombs. The largest of these is Ali Dinar’s tomb, which was built in 1948 for a former Sultan who conquered Harar. Jugol has two primary markets—the Jimma and Eshete markets—and many smaller markets where one can purchase traditional foods, textiles and souvenirs. Although travelers should be cautious of pickpockets at all times, most thefts from tourists occur in crowded market areas so travelers should be particularly aware when exploring these locations.

Shire Valley National Park

Nestled in the Shire Valley is the Shire Valley National Park, a haven for adventurers and nature-lovers alike. The park also boasts stunning views of the valley below, making it a perfect spot for hiking and photography. If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience in Ethiopia, be sure to add the Shire Valley National Park to your list!

Shire National Park is composed of a lot of steep and heavily forested hills. It is possible to start your day at the national park with a coffee at one of the guesthouses in Addis Ababa. That will take approximately three hours. Two options are possible upon arrival to Addis Ababa; traveling to Nazret, or traveling directly to the entrance of the national park. Visitors can also hire a taxi to drive them around while they explore on their own. Tourists are advised not to go past 8 am as this is when many wild animals start roaming around. After checking out some amazing viewpoints, visitors should head back down into town where they can take part in various activities like horseback riding, swimming, golfing, shopping and more!
