Providence’s Yummy Food Culture: Relishing the Good Stuff

There’s no better way to experience food culture than to come to Providence, Rhode Island, and eat your way through the city’s diverse selection of restaurants. Here are just some of the tasty highlights you can enjoy while you’re here

The Best Restaurant Spots

If you’re looking for good food in Providence, you won’t be disappointed. This city has a great food culture, with something to offer everyone. From classic and traditional dishes to modern snacks, there’s something for everyone. And, of course, there are plenty of places to eat. Here are some of the best restaurant spots in Providence.

Start with Tony’s Clam Shop, an old-fashioned seafood restaurant where they serve up New England classics like clam chowder, lobster rolls, and fried clams. If you’re looking for modern twists on classics then head over to Al Forno, which specializes in Italian cuisine. They have a wood-fired oven that creates delicious pies and pizzas along with classic Italian entrees like lasagna and pasta puttanesca. One place that does both old-fashioned classics as well as modern snacks is Olneyville New York System Hot Wieners which serves up one of Rhode Island’s favorite foods–the hot wiener!

But food culture isn’t limited to restaurants in Providence. If you’re looking for fresh, tasty grub on-the-go or for a quick snack on your way to work, then head over to Federal Hill Deli and Subs. You can order up a classic deli sandwich or sub for lunch or grab a bag of chips and one of their famous burritos for an on-the-go breakfast. Speaking of burritos, there’s also Olneyville New York System Burrito where you can get Rhode Island’s second favorite food–burritos! The burritos at Olneyville are always hot and ready-to-eat when you order them so there’s no wait time before heading back out into your busy day.

Culinary Events and Festivals

Providence is home to some great culinary events and festivals! One of our favorites is the Providence Oyster Festival, which celebrates our city’s rich oyster history. Held every year in October, the festival features live music, fresh oysters, and local beer and wine. Other great events include the Rhode Island Seafood Festival, held each summer, and the Rhode Island Food Truck Festival, held annually in September. For a truly unique experience, check out the Providence Night Market, held monthly from May-October. This open-air market features local vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry to fresh produce.

Traditional Rhode Island Breakfast

What’s a traditional Rhode Island breakfast? For many people, it starts with coffee and Johnnycakes. That’s right – pancakes made with johnnycake meal, which is just ground white cornmeal. If you’ve never had them, they’re kind of like thick crepes and are delicious with maple syrup. Another Rhode Island breakfast staple is bung voon – a rice porridge that’s often eaten with soy sauce or fish sauce. And don’t forget the clam cakes and chowder! No visit to Rhode Island is complete without trying these famous dishes.

Where does Rhode Island cuisine come from? The region was originally inhabited by Native Americans, and much of its food culture is influenced by local tribes. This can be seen in dishes like johnnycakes and chowder, which are made with cornmeal (or maize) and seafood respectively. Another culinary influence that can be traced back to Native American is maple syrup. Of course, it would be impossible to mention Rhode Island without talking about coffee! At least part of New England has a coffee culture that dates back to at least 1762. With so many great foods, who wouldn’t want to visit?
