Local fruits and vegetables are often used in traditional recipes, giving them a unique flavor. Lastly, Bahraini food is often sprinkled with spices to give it an extra kick. The diverse landscape of the country allows for an equally diverse variety of fruits and vegetables. In fact, over 350 different types of fruit are grown in Bahrain, including limes, oranges, bananas, guavas, mangoes, peaches and dates. The abundance of fruit means that fresh juices are a staple in many Bahraini dishes. Some popular fruit juices include orange juice (which is used to make traditional desserts), apple juice (typically consumed during breakfast), strawberry juice (most popular with kids) and date juice (consumed after lunch). They are often found by restaurants as a complimentary appetizer while you wait for your main course to arrive.

Bahraini seafood dishes may sound familiar, but they are different from most other seafood. Often, fresh local fish including mahi mahi and red snapper is used rather than frozen fish imported from elsewhere. A common lunch meal is musabbaq halabi, which is a fish grilled on a skewer and served with a type of bread called halwa bread. This bread comes in many variations but all share a unique sweet taste. Sweet porridge (also known as eishta) is another staple of Bahraini cuisine, typically served for breakfast or dinner during Ramadan.

Nashef

A staple in Bahraini cuisine, this dish is a type of flatbread that is sprinkled with sesame seeds. It is usually served with fish or chicken and is a classic example of Bahraini food. At the beginning of the week, families will go to the souk and buy ingredients for nashef. These ingredients include flour, yeast, salt, milk and oil.

The dough is then kneaded for about an hour before it is flattened out on a wooden board with a circular object like a glass jar (called ‘daghaj’). After which, the dough will be rolled out into rounds that are about 5-6 cm thick and cooked on a charcoal grill for about 3 minutes on each side. Finally it will be cut into individual pieces before being sprinkled with sesame seeds if desired.

Mahshi Hindi

One of the most popular dishes in Bahrain is Mahshi Hindi, a type of rice dish that is traditionally made with chicken or lamb. This dish is usually served with a side of vegetables, such as peas or carrots. Mahshi Hindi is a healthy and delicious meal that is perfect for any occasion.

The ingredients needed to make this dish are cooked long grain white rice, onions, green pepper, tomatoes, saffron powder, turmeric powder, salt and ground black pepper. First you must saute onions in oil then add turmeric powder and mix well. Next add tomato puree then stir until the mixture becomes dry.

Add chopped parsley then cook it on low heat until it starts boiling. When boiling add long grain white rice and keep stirring occasionally until all water has evaporated from the pot . Season it with salt and ground black pepper before serving hot!

Kushari

A vegan dish made of rice, pasta, and lentils, topped with a spiced tomato sauce. Often considered Egypt’s national dish, kushari is also popular in Bahrain. The recipe originated from the Hauran region in Syria, which was once part of the Ottoman Empire. However, over time, it has become an Egyptian staple.

Kushari is typically eaten as breakfast or as an evening meal accompanied by tea or coffee. Though you can find it all over Cairo on most days of the week – especially at carts that are usually open until late – it’s still best enjoyed at restaurants like Al-Khawaga where they serve this dish 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Masgouf

A Bahraini specialty, masgouf is a whole fish that’s barbecued over an open flame. The type of fish used varies, but it’s often served with rice, vegetables, and a lemon-based sauce. Masgouf is healthy and delicious, making it a great option for those looking to try something new. It also comes in various types, including red snapper and sea bass. You can even find it in restaurants around the world now too.

Lahma bi Ajeen

One of the most popular dishes in Bahrain is Lahma bi Ajeen, a flatbread pizza that is typically topped with meat, vegetables, and cheese. It’s common to find these pizzas at lunch buffets because they’re easy to make in large quantities. The dough for this dish can be made by either baking the dough on a pizza stone before adding toppings or by cooking it on top of a stovetop burner which has been preheated.

Another popular dish in Bahrain is Pastilla, which is a baked pie made with a rice filling and covered with phyllo dough. To make a traditional version of Pastilla, you will need to use butter to grease your baking pan before adding layers of soaked rice that has been lightly seasoned. The final ingredient you’ll need to bake your traditional pastilla pie is chicken or lamb, which can be added once your phyllo dough has been laid on top of your rice layer.

Shish taouk (Chicken shawarma)

If you’re ever in Bahrain, make sure to try shish taouk! This traditional dish is healthy and delicious, made with chicken that’s been marinated in spices and grilled to perfection. The chicken is then wrapped in a pita with vegetables and sauce. It’s a simple but filling meal that will leave you wanting more. If you want to enjoy it at home, use the following recipe.

It’s easy to make shish taouk at home! There are only a few steps involved. It’s best if you let your chicken marinate overnight, so plan ahead. Take about 4-5 pieces of boneless skinless chicken breasts and cut them into small pieces. Let sit for an hour before cooking on medium heat for 10 minutes on each side until cooked through.
