The hospital was built with Chinese assistance. Other industries in Makokou include forestry, agriculture, small-scale industry and trade. Most of these are run by rural people who bring their produce for sale from villages upriver. There are also some rubber plantations where the latex from rubber trees is processed before export.

Gabon has one national park, Parc National de la Pendjari, situated in its western region. The capital city is named after the Pendjari River, which is an important geographic and cultural landmark that separates this country from its northern neighbor. The park lies almost entirely in Benin, except for a small section in Gabon at its extreme north-western corner. It is estimated that about 300 elephants are present, along with large numbers of hippopotami and rare species of antelope such as Defassa waterbuck, kob antelope and roan antelope. There are also primate species including gorillas, chimpanzees and mandrills as well as other smaller animals such as mongooses, genets, civets and spotted hyenas.
